Finger Knitting – Knot Your Typical Knitting Technique

Finger knitting, a technique that allows individuals to knit without the use of needles, has become increasingly popular in recent years. This method of knitting uses just the fingers of the hands to create a variety of projects ranging from scarves to blankets.

The popularity of finger knitting can be attributed to its ease of use, accessibility, and versatility.

It is a technique that can be learned quickly and it requires minimal tools. This makes it the perfect activity for those new to knitting or on-the-go. Despite its simplicity, finger knitting can produce intricate and beautiful pieces that are perfect for both functional and decorative purposes.

In this blog post, we will explore the world of finger knitting, and look at:

  • Why it’s so great
  • The best yarns to use
  • The amazing things I create with it

Finger knitting – an easy and fun activity

Finger knitting is an easy and fun craft activity that requires no special tools or equipment. All you need are your fingers and some yarn to get started.

This activity is a great way to spend some quality time with children, family, or friends while creating something beautiful and useful.

Finger knitting is also a great way to relax and unwind after a long day at work or school.

The best part about this cool craft is that it is easy to learn and can be done anywhere, making it a perfect activity for long car journeys or waiting in a queue.

No needles or hooks required

Finger knitting is a type of knitting that doesn’t require any needles or hooks. Instead, you use your fingers as the tools to create a wide range of knitting projects.

This makes it an ideal craft for kids and beginners who want to learn how to knit without the complicated tools or techniques. You literally use just your fingers as the needles, and then finger knit the length you want!

Some of the no needles techniques I talk about do need a needle to finish off the pieces. But with finger knitting you can literally make a project without using needles at all! How? Well, the ideal yarns are so bulky they are hard to thread through a needle, so they can just be tucked away in the piece when finished.

Finger knitting is fun for kids and adults

Finger knitting is a fun and easy craft that anyone can learn. It is ideal for both kids and adults who want to learn a new skill or create something unique.

The simplicity of finger knitting makes it a great activity for young children, as it helps to improve their hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Additionally, it is a low-cost activity that can keep kids entertained for hours as they create their own customised designs.

Finger Knitting is a relaxing and meditative craft

Finger knitting can be a relaxing and meditative experience that helps to reduce stress and anxiety. The repetitive motion of knitting with your fingers can be soothing and calming, and can even help to lower blood pressure.

Many people find the process of finger knitting to be similar to meditation, as it requires focus on the task at hand and helps to clear the mind of other thoughts.

The simple act of creating something with your hands can also be a rewarding and satisfying experience that can boost self-esteem and improve overall well-being.

Whether you are an experienced knitter or a beginner, finger knitting can provide a peaceful and enjoyable way to unwind and relax.

Choosing the right type of yarn

The type of yarn you choose can greatly impact your finger knitting projects. Here are some considerations:

  1. Yarn Thickness: The quickest projects knit up quicker when they are finger knitted with a thicker yarn. These are the yarns I prefer to work with, yarns such as T shirt yarn or my unusual recycled plastic bottles yarn. These thicker yarns create chunky, cozy projects which look amazing when they are worn.
  2. Texture: Each yarn has a different texture. Smooth, soft yarns create a different look and feel than textured or variegated yarns. I like to let my creativity guide my choice, and in addition the yarns all make very unique pieces that do not follow the crowd!
  3. Fibre Content: If you follow my blog, you will know that I prefer to use eco friendly yarns. They are more breathable than synthetic yarns, and are so much better for the environment. If I am making something for warmth and comfort, I choose my T shirt yarn or my unusual recycled plastic bottled yarn. I don’t make delicate projects with finger knitting that often, but if I did, I would opt for a soft, lightweight yarn like organic cotton which is breathable next to the skin.
  4. Colour: Yarn comes in an array of colours. Again I prefer the more natural colours, but T shirt yarn comes in such a choice of colours I love to mix and match them. These colours are what inspires me and helps to match the aesthetic of my projects.

Finger knitted creations

There are all manner of projects that I make with finger knitting, including:

  • Skinny scarves
  • Necklaces and bracelets
  • Decorative animals
  • Belts

Finger knitting and me!

Finger knitting was one of the first types of no needles knitting techniques I learnt. It is so easy to pick up, and the finished look of the pieces is truly stunning.

It really did help me in times when I was feeling a bit lonely. I became much more positive about myself, and when I wear, or other people wear one of my makes I feel so proud.
